NEW! The Samson Effect Heads To Hollywood!
I have been asked by a lot of writers how I went about publishing my book. After considering all the questions I have been asked, I thought I would publish a list of resources that can help a writer get published. I am sure this list will continue to grow over time as I come across other sites. I have put the $ before an entry that cost money. However, you will find that most resources are available at no cost. If you have a great site that will fit here, please let me know. I will continue to fill this out over time.
Book Clubs and Author Connections
Reader's Circle- If you've been looking for a way to connect with local book clubs, this is it! With an international database of in-person groups, users can easily find a club or start one of their own. This is a great way for readers and authors to connect.
Dedicated to our Defenders- What a great site! Dedicated to our Defenders is a group that collects donated books from authors and readers and ships them to our soldiers overseas. Our soldiers put their lives on the line everyday for us, yet they can find themselves with a lot of downtime. This organization helps them pass their downtime by providing free books to them that they can read and then pass along to their fellow soldiers. I am a member author and have donated to them. You can send them book to help with their mission. You can even purchase the Samson Effect and have it mailed to them. They will make sure it gets to the soldiers.
Agents and Publishers
Editors and Predators- Here is an unbiased site you can go to in order to check out publishers and agents. Unfortunately, some publishers and editors exist to prey on an author's desire to become published and this is a site to check on their validity.
$ Writer's Market- This is a fee based site where a writer can check out agents and publishers, find out contact info and what type of writing they are looking for, and track your submissions to them. It gives you access to all kinds of markets (books, magazines, contests, and a lot more.)
Online Writing Communities
Author's Den- A place where an author can create a profile and where readers can keep up with their favorite writers. The basic service is free, but you can upgrade your account for a fee. (Check out my site on Author's Den here)
Writers United- This is a nice forum to connect you to other writers
Urbis- This is a great site that lets you post work for others to review. But you need to review other writer's work to earn credits that "unlock" what has been written about work you have posted. Pretty Cool!
Critique Circle- Here is another great site that a subscriber of my newsletter put me onto. I am impressed with this site and plan on spending more time there.
Marketing Tips
Book Marketing Tips- Here is a blog on inexpensive ways to market your book. It is worth checking out.
Book Marketing Works- A list of articles about marketing your book.
Book Signing Article- This is one of the best articles I have read on how to plan and execute a book signing. By author JA Konrath
Mega Lists
Writer's Digest Top 101 Web Sites for Writers- This is a must-see for any serious writer! It has a ton of sites for you to check out in multiple categories.
Recommended Readings
Writer's Digest Book Club- I love this club. You get any 4 books for $20 with no future obligation to purchase more. You need to go through the hassle of letting them know you don't want the automatic selection of the month, but once your 9 month commitment is up, you can cancel your membership.
2008 Writer's Market- This is the print version of the online membership mentioned in the Agents and Publishers section.
Guerrilla Marketing for Writers : 100 Weapons to Help You Sell Your Work- This is by far my favorite marketing book. The tips cost little to no money to implement and are based on sound principles.
Flip Dictionary- This is a unique reference book that will make you glad you have it when you need it. It's not a dictionary or thesaurus. It helps you come up with that perfect word you need for your writing- you know, the one that's always on the tip of your tongue? And it really works!
Fiction First Aid- Have a problem with your fiction writing? Well, this book can help diagnose, explain why it's sick, and then give the cure for your ailing writing.
